Tray Nguyen, 2nd grade parent

My child is currently enrolled in the 2nd grade at Benjamin Banneker Elementary School in Kansas City Public Schools. Our family chose to come to Banneker because his father is the new administrator at the school and we want to be a part of the community he serves and grew up in as a child. The school has an excellent teaching and administration staff. His 2nd grade teacher is phenomenal and remarkable. She challenges him daily with rigorous assignments and instruction while providing a positive nurturing classroom environment.

Banneker is a beautiful campus with an enormous playground, highlighted by a computer lab designed for college students. It is home to the Derrick Johnson Library Den that provides free scholastic books as well as a community garden that community members and students maintain. Students learn about vegetables and are allowed to take the vegetables from the garden home to eat.

As a parent I have plenty of opportunities to be involved and my child does as well. Parent involvement activities include but are not limited to: Muffins with Mom, Doughnuts with Dad, Grandparents Day, Fall Feast, and many holiday programs. Students are able to participate in various programs and honors such as: First Lego Robotics, Elementary National Honor Society, Zoo Club, Boys and Girl Scouts of America, Girls on The Run, Honor Roll, Scripps National Spelling Bee, and much more.

To that end, I would recommend Benjamin Banneker to any parent in our neighborhood.
