Jonathan Bender, Pre-K and 2nd grade parent
My wife and I have a daughter in second grade who has attended the school for three years, and a son who just started pre-kindergarten this year. We selected Border Star because our children had attended a daycare that followed the Montessori method and we believed it would be a good transition for them. We also were impressed by the independence given to students and the warmth that we felt while touring the building.
Border Star has been part of the Brookside landscape for more than 100 years. It’s a massive old school that needs some capital improvements – the district has pledged to address several of those issues, like a new roof, over this summer into fall.
Border Star has an honors choir, a vibrant library, as well as art and music lessons. There’s a school garden where children can harvest vegetables, as well as a prairie next to the playground. There’s an active composting and recycling program that is a joint effort from the teachers, parents, and kids.
The LINC program provides after school care, which means our daughter has been introduced to chess, had a chance to learn about animals with a representative from the Kansas City Zoo, and participate in Zumba in the gym.The PTA regularly organizes social nights, fundraises to assist with field trips and class materials, and looks to find ways to bring families together.
I serve as the new parent liaison for Border Star’s PTA. I encourage you to reach out.
