Application deadlines to apply to Kansas City schools for the 2020-2021 school year are quickly approaching. While it may seem like it’s too early to start thinking about the next school year, the application period is short and we’re over halfway through! The majority of Kansas City’s schools’ application deadlines fall between November 15, 2019 – March 2, 2020. Applying by the schools’ deadline significantly increases your chances of securing a seat at a school that is a great educational home for your student.

In the Kansas City Public School boundaries, there are nearly 90 district, charter, faith-based and independent schools. While families have a great number of options, staying on top of varying deadlines and application processes can be tricky. Here’s a snapshot of important application dates and information to remember:

February 14, 2020 | KCPS Signature Schools

Signature schools (specialized schools with admissions requirements) fill their seats on a first-come first-served basis. KCPS’ application opened on December 5 and will close on February 14. If you haven’t already applied, do so today! You can apply to a KCPS school at

March 2, 2020 | Most Charter Schools*

The majority of charter schools participate in a common application – SchoolAppKC – and the deadline to apply to participate in the lottery is Monday, March 2. If families apply after the lottery and the seats are already filled, then they will be given a waitlist number in the order they apply. Apply here (this can be completed on a mobile device in a few minutes and no uploads are required).

KCPS Neighborhood Schools

Any child who lives in the KCPS boundaries is guaranteed a seat at their neighborhood school. Enrollment is ongoing, but applying sooner rather than later allows schools and students to be better prepared for the start of the school year. Apply at

Private Schools

Check with individual private schools about important application dates!

Please refer to the KCPS and charter school deadlines above, but there are many additional options, as well. Register for Show Me KC Schools’ workshop – Free Pre-K Seats in KC – on February 19 to learn more!
