Get ready! Everything is about to change. It’s not going to be what you are used to, but it is going to be amazing. Just hang in there and wait for it! Once the transformation begins you will never want to go back to the old way.

Before my son started at Ryogoku Soccer Academy he attended public school. I believe in public education. So much so that I have spent the last 15 years teaching in public schools. My son even attended the school I taught at. This was a school I love, in a district I chose to be in. But it wasn’t working for him. He hated it. I had to fight with him to get ready in the morning. The work wasn’t engaging or meaningful to him. He didn’t have a positive relationship with his teacher. He had a lot of friends, but wasn’t really able to interact with them during the school day. The only real time he had to collaborate was at recess, lunch, or when work was finished. Unfortunately, those times were often taken away for various reasons. When the day was over he was grumpy. It was impossible to convince him tomorrow was going to be a better day when we were having to spend every evening processing the stress of that day. Sadly, he wasn’t wrong. Even the good days were clouded by the tough ones.

Ryogoku is different.

The coaches and instructors are highly trained. They know how to learn about each student as an individual. They let the kids teach them about their culture, beliefs, interests, and motivations. They learn about the kids as individual people with their own backgrounds, goals, and talents. They value these differences and use them to teach every single student.

Ryogoku taught my child to love learning again. They have shown him that his way of learning is okay. They have taught me that he is going to grow up to be happy and successful in whatever path he chooses. They have taught him that no matter what the challenge is, he can face it and achieve. He now truly believes he can make a difference.
